The Value of Design

How do we identify value in the context of design and the work that is done by a designer? What does it mean? Is it purely about an economic bottom line? Is it as simple as a transaction where the designer is hired and once the client gets what they need, that’s all there is to it? I would say a giant NO to that. Work done by designers encompasses a broader set of attributes than the finished product. We are in a service-based industry made up of the emotional, economic and environmental characteristics that relate to what is created in the exchange of commerce. If this sounds ambiguous, let’s look at it systemically. As designers, whenever we create work for a client, these are the overlapping areas that get affected in terms of the “big bucket,” items, such as:

    something from nothing that your client values or else they would have
